Preterm birth is a leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Furthermore, babies born preterm often suffer long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, with a tremendous psychosocial and financial burden on affected families and on society as a whole. Despite massive expenditure on research, minimal impact has been made on reducing preterm birth. However, transvaginal ultrasound cervical length assessment is one of the most accurate tools in predicting preterm birth and in developing strategies to reduce its incidence. This talk demonstrates how transvaginal ultrasound can be used as a powerful tool to predict and prevent preterm birth. The indications and proper techniques for assessment of cervical length will be discussed.
