Whose side are you on? Situs Abnormalities and Heterotaxy Syndrome

By definition, heterotaxy is a complex disorder. In practice, fetal heterotaxy is challenging to evaluate sonographically, and the clinical outcomes are highly varied. We aim to provide a clear strategy for diagnosis, counseling, and delivery planning for these challenging cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the normal asymmetric arrangement of the organs in the body and the main pathologic features used to distinguish different types of situs abnormalities.
  • Explain the most common cardiac and extra-cardiac features used to differentiate different types of heterotaxy.
  • Implement a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, counseling, and delivery planning for heterotaxy.
