The pancreas is commonly imaged on ultrasound but often seen as difficult to fully assess. However, many important pathologies can be evaluated using proper ultrasound technique, including utilizing harmonic imaging, color-Doppler, and contrast-enhanced imaging. In this review, we discuss the sonographic evaluation of the pancreas including the normal and pathologic appearances. Inflammatory and infectious conditions are discussed along with differentiating imaging features. Developing roles of strain and shear wave elastography are also explored through discussion of recent literature.
