Ultrasound is a highly flexible imaging modality that is well suited to the evaluation of septic arthritis. In addition to documenting the presence of an effusion, ultrasound can be used to safely guide percutaneous aspiration. Patient positioning and procedural preparation are discussed in this segment. Example cases are shown along with mention of some alternative diagnoses that may be encountered.
