Point of care ultrasound is an invaluable tool that can be performed at bedside that aids in the swift and accurate diagnosis of time-sensitive pathologies. Ruling in a diagnosis such as testicular torsion can help the emergency physician initiate treatment and ultimate disposition within minutes of initial presentation. While ideal management is immediate evaluation by a urologist for surgical correction of torsion, this is not always readily available and the consequences of waiting for a comprehensive study can be disastrous, including the loss of a testicle. This case demonstrates how an emergency physician who is adept at point of care ultrasound can provide fertility-saving care in a resource-limited emergency department in addition to buying time for definitive management.
