Is a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) enough to safely discharge an obstetric patient in the Emergency Department? Do you need to order that transvaginal ultrasound? What if you could gather the information you need from POCUS alone? Our data reveals that patients undergoing POCUS in the ED had significantly decreased length of stay without a change in their management compared to those who underwent radiology performed ultrasound including transvaginal ultrasound. This discovery can save patients time, money, and having to undergo an invasive and often uncomfortable exam. This can also free up bed space within the ED without compromising patient care.
