As the utility and acceptance of ultrasound as part of standard emergency medicine practice has expanded, so has the need for point of care ultrasound (POCUS) education among emergency medicine residency programs across the United States. The Accreditation Council for General Medical Education (ACGME) recognizes the importance of POCUS to the practice of emergency medicine and has therefore designated ultrasound as one of twenty-three milestone competencies required of graduating emergency medicine residents. Besides the ACGME, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) also provides guidelines for POCUS education. ACEP has provided benchmark recommendations regarding the number of scans that residents should perform in order to attain competency in performing the procedure. This benchmark of 25-50 quality-reviewed scans in each of twelve core applications, including trauma/FAST exam, is loosely based on content expert consensus but has not been verified through scientific study. Using a new model of competency assessment for the Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) examination, we aim to estimate the minimum number of FAST scans that residents must complete in order to achieve competency. We will then compare our estimate to the current ACEP benchmark recommendations .
