We sought to determine when placental location could be distinguished in the first trimester and correlate with placental location and in relation to the internal os (e.g. previa/low-lying) in the second trimester. We found that identification of future placental position is more likely after 10 weeks gestational age with correlation to future position in the second trimester. The finding of the placenta covering/at the os is associated with future low-lying or placenta previa. This knowledge may help to enhance specification of low implantation in the first trimester.
