Curricular time in medical education is tight and teaching ultrasound in undergraduate medical education has many barriers. Through an extracurricular student-led interest group, the Ultrasound Interest Group (USIG) coordinates basic ultrasound (BUS) offerings to students to learn fundamentals of machine operation and common sonographic signatures. This program has utilized pre- and post-scan survey instruments to gauge student feedback and to make modifications to better serve the entire medical student body with opportunities to learn more about ultrasound. Student-led interest groups with faculty supervision, focused on basic ultrasound training can be a feasible adjunct to exposing students to the possibilities of using point of care ultrasound in medicine. After completing BUS, students have the option to continue with intermediate ultrasound (IUS) and advanced ultrasound (AUS) techniques, furthering their knowledge of ultrasound within medical school.
