Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine
Weill Cornell Medicine
New York, United States
Dr. Teran is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and translational resuscitation scientist at Weill-Cornell Medicine in New York City. He completed a fellowship in Emergency Ultrasonography at Mount Sinai Hospital, a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at University of Pennsylvania, and he is testamur of the National Board of Echocardiography Critical Care Echocardiography Examination.
Dr. Teran’s research aims investigate novel resuscitation strategies in both laboratory and clinical environments, with a primary interest in the study of CPR physiology and therapies that can lead to improvement in cardiac arrest outcomes by optimizing the effectiveness of CPR. Using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), his current work focuses on the study of the physiologic effects of chest compressions in hemodynamics and cerebral perfusion, and their impact in resuscitation outcomes. He is the founder of the Resuscitative TEE Project and Principal Investigator of the Resuscitative TEE Collaborative Registry (rTEECoRe), a multicenter research network involving 35 centers aimed to accelerate the development of outcome-oriented research and knowledge translation on the use of TEE in emergency and critical care settings. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Teran leads a multidisciplinary resuscitation science large animal laboratory in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesiology at the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca.
His research has been funded by the Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) and the Zoll Foundation, and the National Institute of Health (NIH). He was recently awarded a $1M NIH K23 Mentored Research Training Grant by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) aimed to investigate the hemodynamic impact and clinical outcomes of TEE during cardiac arrest, as well as the barriers and facilitators for successful implementation during resuscitation.
As the course director for The Resuscitative TEE Workshop, Dr. Teran leads a group of multidisciplinary experts and has trained over 1700 physicians worldwide.
