Fetal Growth: Sonographic Challenges and Techniques in Obstetrics

The first lecture will tackle various issues and controversies surrounding the accurate assessment and interpretation of fetal measurements, size, and growth. It aims to clarify these contentious topics and provide clear guidance. The second part of the series will delve into the indications for using different Doppler parameters in obstetric ultrasound, including the Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA), Umbilical Artery (UA), Ductus Venosus (DV), and Pulsed-Wave (PW) Doppler. Attendees will learn the correct techniques for each parameter and gain insights through relevant case studies. Finally, the series will address fetal growth restriction, which affects about 10% of pregnancies. The presentation will explore the evolution of definitions and management recommendations for fetal growth restriction, highlighting current sonographic management practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the optimal use of measurements in diagnosing early pregnancy loss, identify and describe the new definition of fetal growth restriction and the history of those updates, and understand the indications for using MCA, UA, and DV Doppler ultrasound in obstetrics.
  • Explain the pros and cons of customized versus population-weight tables, identify the next steps in the management of fetal growth restriction, and understand the proper techniques of MCA, UA, and DV Doppler ultrasound.
  • Understand the pros and cons of weight tables based on neonatal weights versus estimated fetal weights, review the use of Doppler studies in fetal growth restriction, and understand what is considered an abnormal Doppler finding and correlate those findings to pathophysiology and pregnancy outcomes.
