Deep Dive Into Fetal Brain Imaging

This educational session will provide an in-depth understanding of fetal brain imaging through ultrasound. It will cover both basic and advanced techniques to enhance the information gathered from brain scans, focusing on optimal patient and fetus positioning to improve image quality. The lecture will emphasize interpreting images from multiple planes for a comprehensive three-dimensional understanding of brain anatomy and the identification of potential anomalies. Additionally, it will address the complexities of diagnosing abnormalities in the fetal posterior fossa, highlighting the crucial role of fetal neurosonography, especially the median plane, in evaluating these rare but challenging conditions. The presentation will be enriched with a range of normal and pathological images to illustrate the discussed topics.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge on the differences between a basic and an advanced brain scan, understand the indications to proceed with an advanced brain scan (neurosonography), describe the normal anatomy of the posterior fossa, and practice 3D transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound.
  • Perform a brain scan (basic/advanced) and explain which measurements should be obtained in each scan, recognize/diagnose posterior fossa abnormalities such as Dandy-Walker Spectrum, and understand and use the detailed or targeted fetal neuroscan.
  • Describe the normal anatomy of the fetal brain and differentiate it from when anomalies are detected, and recognize the role of the median plane in the evaluation of the vermis in cases of posterior fossa abnormalities.
