Medical Student
UTMB
Galveston, United States
My name is Amani Patterson (she/her/hers) and I am a second-year medical student at the John Sealy School of Medicine (JSSOM) at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). I was born and raised in Austin, TX, but attended university in St. Louis, MO, and graduate school in Greeley, CO. My journey to medical school has not been linear, but I will become the first physician in my family. I chose to attend the John Sealy School of Medicine at UTMB because of the strong curriculum and tradition of academic success. However, the immediate sense of community and genuine support from faculty, staff, and students solidified that this was the medical school for me. Regarding medicine, my current interests lie in surgical fields, especially obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). I am passionate about women’s health, patient advocacy and equity, delivering culturally competent care, and working to improve healthcare disparities in Texas. To work toward this goal, I have co-founded and currently serve as vice president for an organization geared towards innovation and research in women’s health. I am also an active member of other interest groups relating to women’s health, surgery, diversity in healthcare, and serving the community in Galveston. Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, attending sporting events (especially basketball), listening to music, trying new foods, and spending time on the beach. As a lifelong student in medicine and life, I am incredibly thrilled to be attending AIUM UltraCon 2024.
