Eye Spy: The Clue to Something Serious

In this lecture selected fetal brain abnormalities will be presented. Some of the abnormalities are common and easily diagnosed, while others are less common and, at times, present diagnostic challenges.
Imaging specialists and sonographers deal with complex and dynamic images of the developing fetus, placenta, and maternal structures. Critical thinking skills are essential to interpret these images accurately, identify abnormalities, and assess the overall health of the pregnancy. In this lecture, selected cases will be presented and will demonstrate the importance of the critical thinking process in fetal screening.

Learning Objectives:

  • Diagnose common and selected 'rare' brain abnormalities and develop a systematic approach to screening for fetal abnormalities.
  • Become familiar with the transvaginal appearance of the median plane of the brain and recognize clues to structural abnormalities and what to look for next.
  • Apply the information in their own clinical practice, and understand critical thinking is the cognitive foundation that allows sonographers and practitioners to navigate the intricacies of prenatal imaging and make accurate diagnoses.
